Filipino Wakes
So we are learning about how Filipino wakes work. The body of Dennis came home that night, and will stay here for ten days. Every day and night family and friends come to visit. They are usually fed something and are often drinking and gambling. The gambling happens at almost every wake as the intent is that the people as they win money will donate to the family. Everyone says death here is very expensive. The services of the coffin ect.. are about 160,000 (4000$) but they got it reduced to about 50,000 as he died while playing in a basketball league that is owned by the funeral home. Then to bury him it will cost about 29,000 (700$) for digging the hole and a cement case to put him in. They fortunately have already been making installments for the plot of land. It doesn't sound like much but when the a persons wage is 9-12 dollars a day it is pretty tough to come up with any money beyond living. So family comes by and donates money to them throughout the week. As far as grieving they seem to be doing better and better everyday. I guess mothers day is coming up and will be a tough reminder. It is pretty cool how they are totally comfortable with the body being there and our kids are in and out of their house. Talking about Dennis and how he is seeping or asking inappropriate questions. It is like they are welcomed into the process of grief which is really special! It has been a great week and I have had many good talks with Noel about his brothers death ect.. Thanks for your prayers!
